Channel erosion in the stream
City of Belle Plaine Streambank Stabilization
and Outlet Protection
Location:
T113N, R25W, Section
1,
Blakeley Township
Watershed:
Minor Watershed
#33089
Project:
¨ Streambank
Stabilization
¨ Grade
Stabilization
Prior Condition:
There was an eroding stream channel and culvert outlet along a DNR
public watercourse within the city limits of Belle Plaine. Estimated
soil loss was 53 tons per year. All soil loss was directly contributing
to soil and nutrients into the stream.
Solution:
The streambank
channel and banks were reshaped and armored with cable concrete and
grassed waterways. Grade stabilization was achieved through outlet
protection with rock riprap and a pipe, which conveyed stormwater down
to the stream in a non-erosive manner. Erosion control blankets were
installed on the channel and side slopes of the stream.
Reductions:
Soil saved: 53 tons per year
Phosphorus reduction: 80 pounds per year
Cost:
The total project cost was $68,018, with the city's portion being
$47,168, and the remaining funding coming from the Scott WMO Cost-Share
Program ($20,850). Contributing partners were the Scott Watershed
Management Organization and the Scott Soil and Water Conservation
District.
