Proper use of sidewalk salt: A good step toward clean water
Assisting landowners with conservation in Scott County is what we do. In addition to solving soil erosion issues and water quality concerns, we also focus on education and outreach with a number of events, activities and workshops planned for residents of all ages.
Youth Education
Schools in Scott County have a number of environmental activities to choose from throughout the year. Whether it’s Outdoor Education Days or Children’s Water Festival in the fall or submitting a conservation-themed poster, mural, essay or video in the spring, we try to reach out to students interested in conserving our water, soil and wetlands while protecting wildlife habitats in our state. If your school wants to plant trees or install a rain garden, we can also help students and other youth organizations choose the best varieties and plan the most ideal locations.
For more information on student learning activities, contact our Communications Specialist Diane Hrabe.

Adult Education
There are a number of ways we involve residents in conservation – Soil Stewardship materials at area churches every April, focus meetings with landowners, rain barrel sales, rain garden workshops are a few of these.

New in 2010, the Scott Clean Water Education Program (SCWEP) allows us to partner with local government organizations in Scott County and offer educational hands-on learning sessions – all geared toward improving the quality of our beautiful lakes, rivers and wetlands. Whether you want to install a rain barrel or better understand the fertilizer bag label, we are here to guide you, city staff, elected officials and businesses. Our goal is to make our county’s natural resources healthier through stormwater runoff and volume discussions and actions.
Partners in this great effort with us include Credit River, Spring Lake and Jackson Townships; the City of Prior Lake; the Prior Lake-Spring Lake Watershed District, the Scott Watershed Management Organization and the Vermillion River Watershed Joint Powers Organization.
Contact Water Resource Education Coordinator Dan Miller to discuss stormwater issues in your neighborhood – issues like rain water falling on your roof, driveway, sidewalk and street and traveling to storm drains where it carries pollutants to the near pond, stream, ditch, wetland, river or lake.
