Partners for Wildlife Restoration Program

Fact Sheet

The Scott Soil and Water Conservation District assists the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in the location, review, design and installation of wetland restoration within Scott County. Wetlands that have been artificially drained either by drain tile or a ditching systems are eligible for the wetland restoration programs offered by the USFWS. Restoration of these areas is important to wildlife habitat, water quality, groundwater recharge and flood control. Wetland programs include Partners for Wildlife Wetland Restoration, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Wetland Easement, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Habitat Easement and Partners for Wildlife Grassland Restoration.

Partners for Wildlife Wetland Restoration

Wetlands that have been artificially drained are eligible for this program. The USFWS restores the wetland at no cost to the landowner. The landowner agrees to maintain the restoration for a period of 10 years. The landowner maintains all rights and access to the property and is responsible for controlling the noxious weeds. The restoration can be removed at the end of the contract period at the owner's expense.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Wetland Easement

Naturally occurring or restorable wetlands totaling at least 5 acres in size are eligible. The USFWS appraiser determines fair market value of the land and a lump sum payment is made based on this value. A perpetual easement is recorded on the property deed to permanently protect this area. The landowner agrees not to drain, burn, level or fill the wetland. The landowner maintains ownership, controls access, controls noxious weeds and pays taxes. The USFWS maintains the right to manage the wetland.

 

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Habitat Easement

Land with existing or restorable wetland and /or grassland is eligible for this program. The USFWS appraiser determines fair market value of the land and a lump sum payment is made based on this value. A perpetual easement is recorded on the property deed to permanently protect this area. The landowner agrees not to drain, burn, level or fill the wetland. The landowner maintains ownership, controls noxious weeds, controls access and pays taxes. The USFWS maintains the right to manage habitat on the easement.

Partners for Wildlife Grassland Restoration

Land with existing and restorable wetland present and have at least 20 acres of upland area are eligible. The USFWS and the Scott SWCD will work with the landowner to prepare and seed the site at no cost to the landowner. The landowner agrees to maintain the area for a period of 15 years. The landowner maintains all rights and access to the property and is responsible for controlling noxious weeds. The restoration efforts can be removed at the end of the contract period at the landowner expense.
