Through a grant from the Metropolitan Council, The Scott SWCD began an extensive project in 1997. Over the next several years, water quality will be monitored on a sub-watershed of the Raven stream system. The goal of the project is to determine if conservation practices have significant impact on water quality within a confined watershed. Information gathered from this project will serve as a model for future watershed studies. There are several practices and incentives made available to farmers within the watershed. Listed below is a brief overview of the various programs available in the TCWQI Project Watershed. Conservation Planning: The Scott SWCD will provide you with a comprehensive whole farm plan to address resource concerns on your property. A conservation plan is the fist step to address the needs and concerns of your farm(s). Residue Management Incentives: Farmers are eligible for incentive payment of $10.00 per acre to leave at least 30% residue after planting for both corn and soybeans. Contract duration is two years, and field must be in corn for one year and soybeans the other year to be eligible for payment. Erosion Control Practices: Cost-share assistance is available for a wide variety of structural conservation practices including: Terraces, Water & Sediment Basins, Grassed Waterways, Side Inlets to Ditches, Rock Inlets, Gully Stabilization. The Scott SWCD will pay up to 75% of the cost to install practices.

Nutrient Management: Farmers in the project watershed are eligible for nutrient management incentives to prepare and follow best management practices for manure application and/or fertilizer application on their cropland. Filter Strip/ Land Retirement Incentives: Landowners bid on payment rates they believe they need to install grassed filter strips along ditches, wetlands and streams. Landowners who are interested in permanently setting aside critical areas can receive substantial reimbursement for doing so.
