Our tree program is complete for 2008 please check back to this site in October for price list and order form.

The Scott Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) annually makes available thousands of transplant and seedling trees to county landowners. These trees are inexpensive and are of the finest stock from wholesale nurseries. We offer a wide choice of trees and shrubs in bundles of 25 per variety

This program started in 1973 with just 7,900 trees and has grown to now offer 43,500 trees with 43 different varieties of evergreens, large and medium deciduous trees and shrubs. The tree program was started to promote conservation and help residents create a more beautiful, healthy and ecologically balanced environment. The SWCD’s Tree Program is considered by many to be a true community service. Many of the county’s farmstead and field windbreaks, wildlife habitat plantings, and reforestation efforts have been started as a result of this program. In more recent years, housing developments and community beautification projects have been added to the list of uses under the tree and shrub program.

We encourage all residents to utilize the Tree Program to start or add to their own beautification plans by purchasing stock from the SWCD. Whether you own a city lot and want to plant a privacy hedge line or own a couple of acres and wish to plant a windbreak or shelterbelt our trees will meet all needs. We also offer technical advice on tree plantings for windbreaks and shelterbelts upon request.

Here’s how the program works:

  • The program begins in the fall of each year. Everyone who has ordered trees in the past should receive a copy of the new tree order form, or they may be sent one upon request. Our trees are sold on a first come first serve basis, if a variety is sold out you will be notified immediately and given the opportunity to either substitute or receive a refund.
  • Prices and varieties available are indicated on the order form. Payment must accompany your order.
  • Plan to pick up your trees/shrubs around mid April at the Scott County Fairgrounds. You will receive a postcard about one week before delivery with the specific pick up information.
  • You may also want to take advantage of flags to use as tree markers at nominal cost.
  • A new product the district will be carry this year is fabric tree mats, the benefits of mats are allowing air, water and nutrients through its permeable surface, fabric provides many more benefits to your trees. Because fabric mats control weed growth it eliminates the competition between weeds and trees for moisture and nutrients, dramatically increasing survivability. Fabric also creates a barrier between the soil and the environment above the tree root system. This barrier works to slow water evaporation, reducing irrigation. The fabric barrier also works like a blanket to protect tree roots from temperature extremes, making soil temperatures warmer, increasing root growth. The mats come in 3' x 3' squares with staples in bundles of 25 for your convenience.
