30,950 Tree Seedlings Sold

May 30, 2017

More than 400 customers ordered tree and shrub seedlings through the Scott Soil and Water Conservation District’s tree program this year.  The annual program begins in October when the SWCD begins taking orders, and trees are distributed in late April at a pick-up event at the Scott County Fairgrounds.

This year residents purchased 30,950 tree and shrub seedlings to plant for wildlife habitat, property borders, and landscaping.  Each tree that is planted in Scott County plays a role in conserving soil and water by holding soil in place and allowing storm water to seep into the ground.

While the main attraction of the SWCD sale was tree seedlings, they also sold rain barrels and 88 bags of native seed mix.

Free nitrate testing was also offered during the tree pick-up day.  Over 80 residents brought in their well water to be tested for nitrates.  The water testing was sponsored by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.
