Last year, the SWCD sold a whopping 29,000 trees, selling out of most available species. Each seedling planted goes on to expand wildlife habitat, provide privacy on property borders, and beautify landscaping. Each tree that is planted in Scott County plays a role in conserving soil and water by holding soil in place and allowing storm water to seep into the ground. By creating natural areas on your property, you too can do your part for conserving our natural resources.

What do the different types of trees mean?

Minnesota is known as the north woods for a reason. We host some of the nation's most beautiful native trees within our borders, and because of our unique position and climate, we have several different zones that are best for different types of trees. Southern Minnesota encompasses planting zone 4b, meaning that both deciduous and coniferous trees can thrive. For more information on planting zones, visit the University of Minnesota Extension website.
Conifers are trees and shrubs that stay green all year-round. They have needle-shaped leaves and cones. The most common types of conifers found in Southern Minnesota include pines, cedars, and spruces. These trees tend to be slow-growing, but their investment pays off with beautiful, full green color and festive cheer in the winter months.
Most pines and cedars do very well in windy and exposed areas, making great windbreaks and privacy shields for rural locations. Conifers are also known for their hardy-ness, handling high pH, sandy, and clay soils. Pines, cedars, and spruces prefer areas with full sun.
Deciduous trees lose their leaves in the fall and can provide great fall color, texture, and beauty to your yard. They also provide habitat for birds and offer shade and borders along boulevards and in your yard. Southern Minnesota is home to many deciduous trees, but the most common species include maples, oaks, birches, aspens, and willows.
Deciduous trees can be both fast and slow growing, and with so many species available to choose from, it's easy to find one that fits the setting of your land. For an easy guide to picking the right tree for your property, visit the UMN's tree selection website.
Deciduous shrubs are also great providers of bird and wildlife nesting habitat, and many have attractive spring blossoms, usable fruit, and spectacular fall foliage.
